NHHA submitted comments this week on the Department of Safety proposed rules on state fire codes recommending that the final rules incorporate the recently approved changes to the 2012 Edition of the NFPA 101 Life Safety Code to allow more alcohol-based hand sanitizers per smoke zone than previously allowed. We pointed out that one of the most effective ways to reduce the incidence of Healthcare Acquired Infections is by using evidence based practices for cleansing hands before and after contact with patients and their environment. Therefore, the final state fire code rules must ensure that enough alcohol gel is available throughout hospitals so that it is easily accessible to every nurse, doctor and patient caregiver.
