If you found yourself anywhere near a television or newspaper last month, you no doubt are familiar with the name Brittany Maynard. Brittany was a 29-year-old woman who made headlines when she went public with her decision to end her own life come November 1st, 2014.

Our knee-jerk reaction is to wonder why, but as Brittany’s story unfolded – a story of terminal brain cancer and a future rife with suffering for both herself and her family – the question of why Brittany would want to die became less important. Instead, her story helped shed light on something called “Death With Dignity” and the wide variety of measures and alternatives available for end of life care.
