McDonald, Joshi Deliver Keynotes at NHHA 2013 Annual Meeting

Timothy McDonald, MD JD, a nationally renowned physician-attorney who has been involved in quality and patient safety efforts at the University of Illinois Hospital and Health Science System, delivered the opening keynote address at the New Hampshire Hospital Association's 79th Annual Meeting at the Omni Mount Washington Hotel in Bretton Woods, NH.

Dr. McDonDr. Tim McDonald websizedald's presentation was called "The Seven Pillars Approach: Crossing the Patient Safety-Medical Liability Chasm." The University of Illinois Medical Center at Chicago implemented its 'Seven Pillars" approach in 2006. Modeled after the University of Michigan program, UIC's model stresses open reporting of adverse events by staff and patients, open and prompt communication, and learning from errors.

"We wanted to put a process in place at the hospital that would hug and love the patient and the family throughout their ordeal," said Dr. McDonald when speaking at the Christiana Care Health System's 10th Annual Focus on Excellence Awards last year. "The goal was for us to maintain trust with the patient and their family, even after the medical error had occurred."
